Fargo-Moorhead Visual Artists – 2011 Annual Meeting

Saturday, October 15, 2010 – 10:15 am

NDSU Renaissance Building, Fargo, North Dakota

President Eric Syvertson opened the meeting.

President’s Summary of the Year/State of the FMVA: We are an organization that is run by volunteers and we need your help to continue and to grow. Please volunteer for any committees/activities that interest you on the yellow volunteer sheets and return them to us.

1. FMVA membership has doubled since last year going from 77 members to 144.

2. Eric attended the studio crawl this year reporting it being a great experience. He was impressed with the quality of the studios and the work presented.

3. Talk to any board member if you have any questions.

4. Email any questions about FMVA to info@fmva.us.

Member of the Year Award presented by Jon Offutt and Eric Syvertson to Robert Kurkowski.

Programming: Presented by Kilee Kadrie Weiler and Sarah Dotzenrod. This committee is always looking for volunteers. Board members tend to do most of the work, but involvement of non-board members is critical.

1. “Little Show”, Essentia Atrium – South University Dr., Fargo had 30 participants this year-up from last year. (Show is scheduled to run Mar.1 –April 29, 2012)

2. “BIG Show”, Hjemkomst – Moorhead. Fifty artists participated and over 120 people attended the reception. Excellent growth. (Show is scheduled for April 7-June 20, 2012)

3. Summer 2011 – “Big Country Show” – Plains Art Museum, Fargo; 13 artists participated.

4. Constraint show at the Spirit Room, Fargo, “It’s All in the Game” had 29 participants up from last year’s 18. “Political Animal” is the theme for 2012 constraint show.

5. Mailloux Gallery, North High School, Fargo; 9 artists participated

6. Critiques-first Monday of each month at 7pm at Usher’s House in Moorhead. Average attendance is about 12. Appetizers served.

7. Art Burn: 30 people participated. Very successful.

Treasurer’s Report

Jackie Anderson reported a current checking account balance of $5508.94. The Studio Crawl income is $14,850 with $3,100 of that yet to be collected from donors. Studio Crawl expenses were $12,761.66. In-kind donations came to $18,500. Jackie said Jon Offutt is very resourceful at getting the in-kind donations. The t-shirts sold at this annual meeting were sold at cost.

Committee Reports

Membership Committee:

1. Membership increased from 77 last year to 144 this year.

2. Please check contact information to make sure it is correct for the 2012 directory.

3. FMVA prefers payment online rather than check.

4. FMVA membership brochures are new this year.

5. Look for membership directories in the mail early 2012

Education/Student Outreach/Mentorship Committee:

1. Asking NDSU students and young people in art community what educational activities they would like to see offered by the FMVA.

2. Art Cinema at NDSU Monday nights on the NDSU campus.

3. FMVA will coordinate events with community when guest artists, educators, etc. are visiting.

Studio Crawl: Jon Offutt reported this was the 8th year for the Studio Crawl. Feedback from the artists is important. The economy had a great effect on the amount of contributions. Sponsors have dropped out and a lower level of donations per sponsor was collected. Next year individuals will be approached along with businesses. The average number of participating studios involved falls between 36-40. About 50 artists participated this year as there were some studios with more than one artist.

Professional Practices: Eric Syvertson said this is a weak area for FMVA. There will be a new opportunity to learn and join in a dialogue—“Things to Consider” where members can give their opinion on topics issued through the website and email.

Communications Committee: Kris Kerzman gave credit for the overall communications activities and architect of the website and social media to Cas Johnson. Communications basically focuses on the website and social media.

Comprehensive Communication Plan:

1. Delegate duties away from Cas so she doesn’t have to carry the whole burden.

2. Update emails/website

3. Develop a calendar of events

4. Provide a “quick reference” of board officer duties

5. Get better coverage in media markets

6. Organize promotional images showing what FMVA does

Speak to Kris if you have any suggestions. This past year had big strides in media coverage. There were TV interviews, radio coverage, article in The Arts Pulse, and the newspaper. Eric mentioned that good communication allows us to reach members, gain new members, and get show and event information out to the public.

Board Nominations: Eric Syvertson explained expectations/guidelines of the board.

• 2011 Board Members: Eric Syvertson, Brenda Luthi, Mackenzie Kouba, Kris Kerzman, Kilee Kadrie Weiler, Sarah Dotzenrod Jackie Anderson, Eric Johnson and Emily Williams-Wheeler.

• Retiring Board Members: Brenda Luthi, Jackie Anderson and Eric Johnson

• Seeking Re-election: Eric Syvertson (1 year only) and Emily Williams-Wheeler

• Nominations- Gia Rassier of Concordia College nominated by Kilee, Will Buchanan nominated by Eric S., Patrick Tupa ,self-nominated, and Catie Miller, self-nominated.

Jon Offutt moved the nominations close. Jackie Anderson seconded. Motion passed. Meg Peldo made the motion that candidates be elected. Brad Bachmeier seconded. All members present agreed.

Eric thanked everyone for attending the meeting. He stressed that if members have questions, they need to talk to the board members. He again asked that everyone make certain their contact information was current and that they turned in their volunteer sheets. Meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Emily Williams-Wheeler, Secretary

Unglued: Christmas Market

Fargo’s first-ever handmade pop up gift shop!

Following up on the success from Unglued: Craft Fest, Unglued is opening Fargo’s first ever handmade pop up gift shop Black Friday through Christmas Eve downtown Fargo – Unglued: Christmas Market. Continuing to pull together the emerging, creative community in the area and beyond, the shop will feature all handmade items created by local and regional crafters hand selected to bring creative, trendy gift options. In addition, the shop will inspire others to get creative by featuring kid and adult gift workshops, free hot chocolate to enjoy while shopping, and other special events. Quite simply – a whimsical, refreshing holiday shopping experience.

Bringing back traditional crafting techniques with a fresh, new flair and lots of Midwest love, Unglued: Christmas Market is sure to satisfy a market that is bursting at its seams for the creatively handmade. Over 70 crafters will be represented in this new venue for their handmade goods to be featured. Most work busy day jobs outside of the artistic realm and find that being a part of Unglued gives them the creative outlet they need. One crafter wrote, “Really busy crazy with both of my jobs and Unglued keeps me going. Knitting keeps me sane and this gives me something to look forward to.”

Gift items featured will be screenprinted linens and textiles, metal works including jewelry stands and deer antlers, handsewn ereader covers, upcycled vintage jewelry, organic baby clothes, silkscreened ties, beauty products, knitted and crocheted cowls and slouchy hats, vinyl wallets, wall art, stuffed monsters, ruffled Christmas stockings, greeting cards, and ornaments, and the list goes on. One attendee from Unglued’s craft fest this past March wrote, “I came up from Starbuck, MN & it was SO worth the (2 hour) drive! It was so lovely to see so much talent in one space!” Many of the same crafters will be represented in addition to many new, emerging talents.

Wanting to inspire others to also get creative, six gift workshops will be offered to make items such as thumb-printed necklaces for mom and grandma, fancy friendship bracelets for girlfriends, glass etched coffee glasses for dad and grandpa, and magazine Christmas trees for modern décor.

When: Black Friday – Christmas Eve

Hours: Thurs. 5pm-9pm, Fri./Sat. 10am-9pm and Sun. noon – 9pm.

The Fargo Project! Call for Letters of Interest Due Nov 18

The Fargo Project

The City of Fargo is currently working on a pilot project to transform a neighborhood drainage basin into a community commons that will reflect the internal life and cultural vibrancy of the Fargo community. Meanwhile, the basin will maintain its function as a storm water collection site. The “Fargo Project” is made possible thanks to a partnership with ecological artist Jackie Brookner and by a $100,000 National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) grant and. This grant will be matched by the City of Fargo.

Background

Since 2000, the City of Fargo has been installing large drainage basins and drains throughout the city in order to respond to flooding from summer rainfall events. These drainage facilities are scattered throughout the city. While the basic infrastructure need is satisfied, an opportunity to enrich the community and these sites through culture, art, and a sense of social connectivity has developed. This opportunity is based on a relationship established with ecological artist Jackie Brookner, and through the granting of a National Endowment for the Arts grant. The project that has been defined through a community participatory project titled “The Fargo Project”.

The Fargo Project is about spearheading a public engagement and design program that will facilitate a process which will define these spaces as community commons, reflecting the internal life and cultural vibrancy of the Fargo community, while still maintaining their function as storm water collection sites. This process will begin with a single pilot project developed under the care of ecological artist Jackie Brookner, along with local artists. They will work together with one of the surrounding neighborhoods affected by the new drainage ditches to design the first of many new functional focal points within the city. The strategies developed and lessons learned from this first project will be developed into a communication and design process model which can be used for future developments within Fargo, as well as for other cities seeking to build new forms of diverse public engagement.

The Fargo Project provides an opportunity to respond to community needs through a participatory public art process. With water as the vehicle for connecting people to spaces, the entire process is intended to activate a collective creative agency. One neighborhood will lead the way by designing and implementing a plan to transform the space. Working with a team of local artists and specialists in engineering, landscape architecture, and ecology, the neighborhood will develop the process while completing the transformation.

Project Goals

The site will be transformed at the landscape scale to meet the community’s priorities while still effectively holding storm water. The goal is to honor the identity of the place and look forward to its potential future by responding to its current social structure, cultural history, natural history, and relationship to the Red River watershed. The process itself will produce strategies, methods, and creative resources for an ongoing public art program. The process of this design is a part of the art and the goal just as much as the final transformed space is.

Project Timeline

September 15, 2011 – December 15, 2011

Analysis: Comparative analysis of neighborhood demographics, social needs, and watershed infrastructure to explore how these overlap. In September 2011, 20 neighborhood areas were analyzed and then short listed to three sites, selected for further analysis. These sites are: Y West, Buena Vista, and Jefferson Park (see attached map). Neighborhood outreach activities and contextual study to learn about the cultural diversity, community needs, and stakeholder interest of each of these areas is a part of this phase.

January 15, 2011 – March 15, 2012

The project team will hold meetings and workshops with each of the three selected neighborhoods to inspire interest and to develop the skills and capacity for participating in a sustained community process, from conceptualization to implementation, to use and care. One of the three neighborhoods will be selected as the pilot project to be completed (with the intention that the other two sites will be completed at a later time). Participants with varying expertise will be integrated into these neighborhood workshops. Conceptual design development of the pilot project will also be an outcome of this phase.

March 15, 2012 – June 15, 2012

The collaborative design process between neighborhood participants, community members, and artist partners will focus on the uses of the neighborhood drainage basin, its design, and its associated programming.

June 15, 2012 – September 15, 2012

Construction and implementation of the pilot project will take place in this phase. The Project is to be completed by Sept. 15, 2012. This includes the installation of the design through participatory collaborative process and construction with the City. Analysis and a workbook guide will be produced to document the process and to inform a participation model for other communities.

Information about the project is also available at our website, www.thefargoproject.com. The Letter of interest is due on November 18, 2011. Complete details including a project description and necessary application materials are listed in the Call. If any questions come up regarding the RFL, they can be directed to Nicole Crutchfield. Her email is ncrutchfield@cityoffargo.com, and she can be reached at 701-287-7782.
