Meanwhile, the basin will maintain its function as a storm water collection site. The “Fargo Project” is made possible thanks to a partnership with ecological artist Jackie Brookner and by a $100,000 National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) grant and. This grant will be matched by the City of Fargo.

Background

Since 2000, the City of Fargo has been installing large drainage basins and drains throughout the city in order to respond to flooding from summer rainfall events. These drainage facilities are scattered throughout the city. While the basic infrastructure need is satisfied, an opportunity to enrich the community and these sites through culture, art, and a sense of social connectivity has developed. This opportunity is based on a relationship established with ecological artist Jackie Brookner, and through the granting of a National Endowment for the Arts grant. The project that has been defined through a community participatory project titled “The Fargo Project”.

The Fargo Project is about spearheading a public engagement and design program that will facilitate a process which will define these spaces as community commons, reflecting the internal life and cultural vibrancy of the Fargo community, while still maintaining their function as storm water collection sites. This process will begin with a single pilot project developed under the care of ecological artist Jackie Brookner, along with local artists. They will work together with one of the surrounding neighborhoods affected by the new drainage ditches to design the first of many new functional focal points within the city. The strategies developed and lessons learned from this first project will be developed into a communication and design process model which can be used for future developments within Fargo, as well as for other cities seeking to build new forms of diverse public engagement.

The Fargo Project provides an opportunity to respond to community needs through a participatory public art process. With water as the vehicle for connecting people to spaces, the entire process is intended to activate a collective creative agency. One neighborhood will lead the way by designing and implementing a plan to transform the space. Working with a team of local artists and specialists in engineering, landscape architecture, and ecology, the neighborhood will develop the process while completing the transformation.

Project Goals

The site will be transformed at the landscape scale to meet the community’s priorities while still effectively holding storm water. The goal is to honor the identity of the place and look forward to its potential future by responding to its current social structure, cultural history, natural history, and relationship to the Red River watershed. The process itself will produce strategies, methods, and creative resources for an ongoing public art program. The process of this design is a part of the art and the goal just as much as the final transformed space is.

Project Timeline

September 15, 2011 – December 15, 2011

Analysis: Comparative analysis of neighborhood demographics, social needs, and watershed infrastructure to explore how these overlap. In September 2011, 20 neighborhood areas were analyzed and then short listed to three sites, selected for further analysis. These sites are: Y West, Buena Vista, and Jefferson Park (see attached map). Neighborhood outreach activities and contextual study to learn about the cultural diversity, community needs, and stakeholder interest of each of these areas is a part of this phase.

January 15, 2011 – March 15, 2012

The project team will hold meetings and workshops with each of the three selected neighborhoods to inspire interest and to develop the skills and capacity for participating in a sustained community process, from conceptualization to implementation, to use and care. One of the three neighborhoods will be selected as the pilot project to be completed (with the intention that the other two sites will be completed at a later time). Participants with varying expertise will be integrated into these neighborhood workshops. Conceptual design development of the pilot project will also be an outcome of this phase.

March 15, 2012 – June 15, 2012

The collaborative design process between neighborhood participants, community members, and artist partners will focus on the uses of the neighborhood drainage basin, its design, and its associated programming.

June 15, 2012 – September 15, 2012

Construction and implementation of the pilot project will take place in this phase. The Project is to be completed by Sept. 15, 2012. This includes the installation of the design through participatory collaborative process and construction with the City. Analysis and a workbook guide will be produced to document the process and to inform a participation model for other communities.

Information about the project is also available at our website, www.thefargoproject.com. The Letter of interest is due on November 18, 2011. Complete details including a project description and necessary application materials are listed in the Call. Entitled “WWW.”, the exhibit explores via artist interpretations how communications technology has influenced contemporary life.

The theme of this exhibit: If art is an interpretation of reality, then how might art examine the profound, life-changing reality of contemporary communications technology? The web has revolutionized not only how we communicate, but how we process time and experience. The conclusions of social scientists on this issue raise now-familiar themes ranging from deeply altered human relations to limitless information which expands human potential.

Diverse interpretations are anticipated and encouraged from participating artists. Entry details and an application form are found at http://tinyurl.com/wwwexhibit. Entries are juried and there are cash awards for winning submissions. For inquiries, please email wwwexhibit@northfieldartsguild.org.

Call for Entries – The Big Art Show

Call for Entries

Events

Opportunities

Shows

The Big Art Show

FMVA Big Art Show is a wide variety of art (2D and 3D) from both emerging and established artists.
